KMHRP News
dateline 2021...
Time for another long overdue update, a few years ago.
Not being there and being a working stiff, makes it
hard to keep up on things in LA. Please accept my apologies.
I would guess there are local social media places where
KMHRP news, photos and info are shared. But I am no
longer in the loop since we moved out of state 18 years ago.
We do still have some KMHRP bird booklets though. :)
The renovation and rehabilitation projects finished and
the park officially re-opened a few years ago. I hear
it is very nice for the most part. Apparently the
Harbor City Greenway (formerly Wilmington Drain) area
has not fared so well with the rehab projects, being
a bit out of the mainstream flow. Some areas of habitat
at the park sound like they are doing great. I would
love to be able to see it now.
If you are interested in bird reports there you might
try checking ebird for KMHRP reports. I can tell it
is not getting the birder coverage it should because
for the last decade Neotropic Cormorant and Yellow-crowned
Night-Heron have been being reported all over at every
wet spot in the L.A. Basin, and last time I looked there
were still no reports for KMHRP. So come on local birders!
Your mission, should you choose to accept it...

....dateline July 2015....
Just to give a long overdue update ... the park is closed as
it undergoes a major renovation. It is (finally!) getting lots
of maintenance and improvements, some of which have
been dreamt about for over 20 years and more by some of us.
So while an inconvenience at the moment I am sure it will be
a better park when it is all done. The improvements in the area
long known as the Wilmington Drain by locals (now called the
Harbor City Greenway) are complete and that section is open now.
Below are some recent photos taken by Bob Beckler showing
some of the work and improvements, as well as the lake
level in the drought (wow!). Should be good for shorebirds
in fall (July through November) if you can scope it from
some vantage point. You can bet I'd find a spot if there!
Bob keeps me posted..... THANKS BOB!!!
For those that don't know me, my wife and I moved from the
area in 2003 so are not there to watch and report anymore.
However we felt the webpage meritted being available to
the public for its information so have kept it up, though
not updated. It seemed a fair number of people were searching
online for KMHRP information. We have been revising (
"modernizing" lol ) the pages
and trying to find and fix errors, etc., please feel free if
you know of one to report it to us, we appreciate it, I'll find
that dang Mew Gull picture ... it was there at one time.
The site has been moved twice and a couple things fell off
apparently.
In 2006 we did make available the KMHRP bird list booklet,
which is of course still available, and if you would like
to support the website, that is a great way to help. We hope
you enjoy the site and that you find something useful or of
interest here. It is just the tip of the iceberg of the fun
one can have at KMHRP.

Special thanks to Bob Beckler for the usage of the photos!
Here is one of the artist concept construction signs on site
Another sign on site currently
This is the north end of lake in the drought, 2013
Looking south from north end toward boathouse, 2013
(looks like shorebird heaven)
Looking at north end from across P.C.H., 2014
Former work trailer area at north end, 2014
2014, boathouse behind red vehicles, modular filtration units
June 2015, lovely sludge, about 30 years without ever removing it
and the dam caused it to fill in much more than normal, and is why the
lake has been so shallow for so long.
Here is the sign for the new Harbor City Greenway
There is a nice path with a bunch of native plants growing
It looks great, give this a few years and it will be awesome!
Thanks again Bob Beckler for letting us share the photos!
